HMC response to Social media calling HMC a “Con”

  Back to News

We have been notified of a video that is circulating across many social media platforms accusing HMC of being a con. The Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) takes any unsubstantiated defamatory allegations extremely seriously, and has tried to make contact with the individual to remove the video immediately and issue an apology.

HMC is a not for profit registered charity and has been regulating the Halal food sector since 2003, via rigorous monitoring and inspection.

This is done by trained personnel who are present within slaughterhouses, manufacturing facilities to ensure that, products certified by HMC meet with the highest Halal standard and provenance.

To clarify our ESMA Certification, HMC is an accredited Halal certification body which meets their standards. This confirms that HMC certified products can be exported to the UAE and GCC countries. ESMA accredits many organisations in the UK and across the world, but this does not mean that all the organisations have the same systems and standards. It only confirms that the organisation meets the ESMA standards.

Unfortunately it seems as though the reporter within the video does not have a sound understanding of how this industry works and is merely leading viewers down a garden path of more confusion. The HMC standard does not allow for any pre-stunning across any species and HMC is the only organisation in the UK that has full-time supervision within production sites to qualify products as being Halal.

Therefore, to call out HMC, as being a con without making any contact with HMC, and not having seen the way that HMC operate within the supply chain is foolish to say the least and defamatory. A simple phone call would have been much easier rather than confusing the Muslim community further.

HMC is seeking legal advice on this matter and will provide further guidance in due course.

HMC is the UK’s largest Halal certifying body, employing over 220 people. Last month alone, HMC staff spent 12,000 hours to ensure your food is genuinely Halal with 13,000 visits made to outlets nationwide. It is a registered charity and also a not for profit organisation. It is overseen by a voluntary body, the National Executive Committee that consists of mainly scholars who are the Trustees of the organisation. HMC has been set up to work in the favour of all Muslims and the consumer at large. HMC aims to regulate and at every point inspect Halal products from source to the consumer. HMC is committed to serving the Muslims and the wider community and it intends to provide peace of mind and security where required.
