Are you buying Halal Hens?
“UK Breeders and Hen clarification from RSPCA”.
HMC has been in contact with the RSPCA who have clarified that all hens in the UK that are RSPCA assured are gas killed once they arrive at the slaughterhouse. It is our understanding many breeders and hens are being passed off as being Halal when these birds do not meet with the Halal standard. Gas killing is where birds are placed inside a gas chamber and are suffocated to death before slaughter.
We therefore urge the Muslim community to be careful and cautious when purchasing hens from non-certified sources as there is no way to know whether the hens meet with the Halal standard. If you wish to seek clarity from your butcher, please ask them to show you the product label which can be found on the box and this will tell you the origin of the product. Furthermore if you wish to go a step further you can take a picture of the box and email HMC so that we can give you more information about the site where the slaughter takes place.
HMC is communicating with its members and other external agencies to see how the matter can be resolved as Haram products are being passed off as Halal.
Should you require any further clarity on this matter please do not hesitate to contact a member of the HMC team.
